Demand your government goes cage-free

The UK Government recently introduced mandatory rules called 'Government Buying Standards' that demand as a minimum English public sector institutions buy eggs from hens kept in 'enriched' battery cages. Effectively this means taxpayers' money could be used to support confined systems of production which prevent huge numbers of hens from being able to carry out many natural behaviours properly each year. Hens get new measures

Laying hen members who have had a Freedom Food assessment or RSPCA monitoring visit in the last few months will have noticed the addition of a brief new 'welfare outcome assessment'. This is the assessment of a set of animal-based measures, which helps demonstrate compliance with certain RSPCA standards. The results can also be used to provide members with feedback on what's going well with their animals and any areas for improvement. Read more…
